The University of Tasmania (UTAS) is Public Research University. It was founded in 1890.
UTAS is situated in Hobart, Luncheston and Burnie, Tasmania; Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is a sandstone university and is a member of the international Association of Commonwealth Universities and the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning.
The university offers various undergraduate and graduate programs in a range of disciplines, and has links with 20 specialist research institutes, cooperative research centres and faculty based research centres; many of which are regarded as nationally and internationally competitive leaders. Inter-disciplinary research in Computing and IT is a strength of the University. Their three strategic research themes are Smart Systems, Services and Applications; Computational Data Modelling and Analysis; and Information, Visualisation and Social Media. Researchers conduct their research with a wide range of internal and external research organisations.
On 10 May 1949, the university awarded its first Doctor of Philosophy to Joan Munro Ford. Ford worked as a research biologist in the University of Tasmania's Department of Physics between 1940 and 1950.
